What kind of green talent does Spain and Europe need?

Professor Borja Rojas wonders and answers this and other questions in his article for ESGLOBAL. He states that Europe’s commitment to reply to the climate change challenges grows in different spheres of society yet in order for this commitment to take place, it is necessary to count on people with the right set of skills and knowledge. A collective of human resources appropriate to transform our economy, our industry and our consuming habits. What he calls “Green Talent”. What is Green Talent? How can we connect education with the new needs of the new work market? How much Green work can be generated? If you would like to know the answers to these questions and more, read his article (in Spanish) here.

THE 1312 PROJECT

A fleet of more than 200 ships set sail to explore the limits of the Atlantic Ocean.

And so began in April 2021 Project 1312, with a remarkable Letter from Felicia Appenteng: Chair, IE Africa & Managing Director of the IE Fund and Lilian Lopez: Regional Director, IE North America. Such a promising prologue served to introduce the Project 1312, an initiative from IE University that celebrates the positive impact of connections between Africa and the rest of the world. It is a series of four digital journals highlighting the communities, stories, and collaborative work of IE Africa Center & IE North America. It is a human-centered medium. In October the third journal is coming to life, if you are interested in reading this last journal as well as the previous two, sign up for the newsletter here.

Finance. Alternative investing

“Sustainable investment for “additional” profitability”

An article written by Laura Nuñez (Professor of Finance and Director for the Center for Insurance Research at IE Business School) and Marta Olba, published in the financial newspaper Cinco Dias. In this article the authors write about the numerous economic benefits of investing in ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance). ESG Investing is an evolution of SRI (Socially Responsible Investing) and it is an investing strategy that seeks not only financial returns but also a positive social and environmental impact. Read the full article here.

Women in Sports

Imagine if one of the all-time best tennis players, Serena Williams, quit playing after highschool

During adolescence around 86% of girls that play a sport end up quitting around this time. More so if it is a sport considered “masculine”. Knowing the physical and psychological benefits derived from sports practice, IE WOMEN brought closer all the sports clubs from Segovia to the girls in the community, firstly to prevent them from dropping their sports practice, but also to promote sports to more girls so they start playing. A much needed and great initiative from our colleagues at IE WOMEN.

  1. Increase the threshold of your influence: SPREAD KINDNESS. There is greatness in small gestures, from lending a helping hand, holding the door, listening and showing concern to random acts of kindness that might change someone’s day. This is by far the easiest way of having an impact on the people around you. In kindness lies great power. This is why our tip is for you to go ahead and increase the threshold of your influence, impact your surroundings by being kind.
  2. Be proactive: GET INVOLVED. “How can I help?” is an ice breaker that will take you far. Once you overcome shyness, reticence and awkwardness if any you will see that the personal gains of you getting involved in activities for the improvement of the community are endless.
  1. Cycle to class. Cycle to work. It’s fun, it’s clean and it’s good for your health. Make sure you wear a helmet and you follow thoroughly all road rules.
  2. Go Paperless. Go Techie. Take notes in your phone  or on your computer. Use apps to make your notes, presentations or comments easier. And as a rule of thumb if you would like to be more sustainable always go through the 4 Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Rethink.
  1. Vitamin D. Follow the Sun. With an estimated average of 2769 hours of sun in Madrid, you have no excuse to take your daily dose of vitamin D. Vitamin D is fundamental for strengthen your bones and muscles, focus in class, supports the immune system to fight inflammation and helps battling depression among other benefits.
  2. Be grateful. Be happy. McCraty and colleagues (cited in McCraty & Childre, 2004), in one of their studies on gratitude and appreciation, found that participants who felt grateful showed a marked reduction in the level of cortisol, the stress hormone. Aside from reducing cortisol, gratitude increases oxytocin the glue hormone that is responsible for us having meaningful relationships with each other.
