Alumni Taking the Lead: Hashem Sabbagh
IMBA2015

Hashem Sabbagh leads the strategy and project development of the Black Pearls Football Academy in the Middle East, which fosters the talent of teenagers from refugee camps and provides them with opportunities to play professional football in Brazil. In 2018, Hashem organized a massive tryout from the Zaatarti Refugee Camp resulting in the recruitment of four talented Syrian refugee boys. Their story inspired Hashem to develop a documentary film about their lives. He is now the Executive Producer of Five Football Dreams, which follows these boys from the Zaatari Refugee Camp to the beaches of Rio de Janeiro. “Taking these boys from the depths of despair to empower them to change their life has been an incredible journey."

Red Innova: A Roundup of Fall 2020 and a Look to the Future

“When people ask me what I do, I tell them that my job is to help the people who are changing the world". Our colleague Gustavo, a director of the Fundacion MAPFRE Awards for Social Innovation (boosted by IE), once shared this musing with some Red Innova members. It resonated because, despite all of the buzzwords and colorful descriptions surrounding Social Innovation, at the end of the day, that is exactly what our team at Fundacion MAPFRE and IE aims to do. Through the Awards and the Red Innova community, we support dedicated, courageous, and passionate social innovators in changing the world. We look forward to 2021 and to the design of our upcoming program of activities, to help our community to stay resilient in times of change! Click HERE.

Digital Transformation for Inclusive Business Development Project supported by J.P. Morgan

Thanks to the support of J.P. Morgan, the Center for Social Innovation & Sustainability at IE launched the Second Edition of the project “Digital Transformation for Inclusive Business Development”in May 2020. We run this project in collaboration with the City Council of Madrid and Orange.
During the Second Edition of the project, 70 small business owners are receiving support to develop their e-commerce strategies that are consistent with their business model and overall sales approach. In this way, we help them to improve their revenues by selling through online channels and reaching people that otherwise wouldn’t be able to go to their shops due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Resilience / vulnerability of Spanish households in the face of COVID-19. Disparities in the distribution and composition of savings in Europe

This research study conducted by the Household Savings Observatory - one of few to look at the capacity of households to face the financial constraints resulting from the COVID-10 crisis - considers all of the financial assets that a family may have. Even the most illiquid assets are included, such as pension funds or some saving insurance policies, that contain clauses allowing them to be liquidated when significant and unexpected life events occur. Further, this study takes into account the financial resilience that owning real estate provides, especially when it is free of mortgage burdens. Several countries are examined (Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, and Spain), which together account for 80% of the population and GDP of the Eurozone. Click HERE to read.
